The Best Coffee Grinders (Burr Grinders) 2023

(Manual and Electric)

Electric Coffee Grinders

1) Coffee Grinder with Conical Burr by Baratza Virtuoso+

Professionals frequently choose Baratza's Virtuoso+ coffee grinder as the best at-home grinder and for good reason. The machine is securely constructed from both metal and plastic, produces a wide range of grind sizes, the results are consistent, and is backed by friendly customer service. Beyond that, this is the grinder to acquire for dedicated home-brewed coffee fans looking to maximize control over grind size. I don't appreciate disassembling and reassembling the burr set for cleaning because it isn't intuitive enough.

Best For: People who use scales to measure everything are familiar with terms like flow rate, brew time, and extraction level. They also know their bean-to-water ratio by weight. They prefer light to medium roasts since they bring out more of the natural flavors of the beans.

2) The Smart Grinder Pro by Breville

Because it is less expensive than our other top recommendation, the Baratza Virtuoso, and also performed exceptionally well in our tests, Breville's Smart Grinder Pro is a viable alternative. Compared to the Virtuoso, it has a finer grind. The results were closer to the medium grind that other machines generated, even at the coarsest setting. However, it will work well for the majority of other brewing techniques and can even serve as an entry-level espresso grinder—something that few other home coffee grinders can do. This may make it less suitable for creating French press and cold brew.

Best For: The same individuals would purchase the Virtuoso, but those who would like to casually experiment with pulling espresso shots are less inclined to produce press pots or cold brew.

3) Conical burr coffee grinder Baratza Encore

Baratza's entry-level Encore grinder, which has a lighter-weight, all-plastic chassis, has a lot going for it. It has the same motor as the more expensive Virtuoso and a burr set that grinds almost as well as—though a little slower than—the Virtuoso, although with a marginally less effective burr set. It's also important to know that if you ever feel that the Encore isn't quite cutting it, you can update the burr set to the one designed for the Virtuoso.

Best For: Anyone who is thinking about buying the Virtuoso but isn't quite ready to shell out the additional price.

4) Conical burr coffee grinder by OXO Brew

Like many of OXO's products, the burr grinder has an easy-to-use design. More importantly, given its cost, it provides great grind consistency. This is a good entry-level grinder for the majority of home-brewed coffee lovers because it is about as cheap as a burr grinder can get before the grind quality really starts to decline.

Best For: Anyone who enjoys a good cup of coffee but may not fully understand what terms like TDS (total dissolved solids), acidity, and sweetness mean (at least when discussing a cup of joe) and wants more control and the opportunity to experiment with grind sizes.

5) Precision Coffee Grinder by Krups

You can't beat the price on this Krups model if you'd like to stop using a blade grinder to chop up your beans (after all, it does kinda stink when your coffee tastes like the cumin you also blitzed in there) and our favorite grinders are out of your price range. Although its build quality is subpar and its grind is unpredictable, you get what you pay for. On the plus side, you'll still have more control over your grind size than you would with a blade grinder, and for many individuals, that's all that matters even with the inconsistent grind.

Best For: Coffee users who frequently purchase dark roasts, enjoy their coffee with dairy or sugar, or who prefer to grind whole beans for a more flavorful, fresher taste.

Manual Coffee Grinders

1) Manual coffee grinder 1Zpresso JX

The cup quality of the 1Zpresso JX Manual was comparable to that of our preferred motorized burr grinder, and it was also the fastest grinder I tested. The 1Zpresso JX Manual was easy to grind with and simple to adjust thanks to its solid construction and excellent workmanship.

2) C40 MK4 Comandante Hand Grinder

Although the Comandante C40 MK4 is expensive, devoted coffee lovers might find it to be worthwhile. The Comandante's high-nitrogen steel custom-designed burrs make some of the best-tasting coffee grounds I've ever tasted, and it also produces coffee grounds.

3) C2 Max Timemore Manual Grinder

The Timemore C2 Max was simple to use and nearly equaled our top recommendation in every test for those searching for a grinder that makes great-tasting coffee at a price point lower than most motorized grinders.
